dsc_0195.JPGWe believe that faith is best nurtured and grown in the home. Equipping all members to live a life of faith in action, partnering home and congregation, reaching out into the community with God’s tangible care, provision and love is important at St. John.

We offer Cross-Generational events throughout the year to bring people of all ages together in an interactive and fun setting. Milestone Ministry events connect a child with an adult to learn about God’s presence in different stages, or milestones, in our lives.

Everyone is invited to these events – you do not need to be a member of St. John to join in these great family activities!

Cross-Generational

When was the last time you learned something from a grandparent? A parent? A child? Bringing all age groups together brings a new sense of learning and how each of us perceive an event. Throughout the year, various cross-generational events are held to connect all ages with fun, faith-building activities.

Everyone is invited to enjoy these fun, interactive events! Visit the calendar for event dates and times.

Blessing of the Backpacks  ~  August 24 & 27, 2017

A blessing for our students as they begin a new school year, and adults as they begin a new job. These days mark the beginning of a new chapter as we travel on our life path.

"God’s Work. Our Hands.”

Sunday  ~  October 1, 2017

This is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) – one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor. We gather together for worship and breakfast. The later worship service is replaced by going out into the community and putting our hands and feet into action as participants do community service projects. These projects consist of a wide array of things so all age groups can participate.

Fall Festival ~ Nov.  2017

Enjoy the smells, tastes and fun that fall brings us! This is a fun evening with supper, crafts and games for people of all ages to enjoy.

Baptism Remembrance Sunday ~ Jan.  2018

Families and folks of all ages come together to join the generations as we celebrate our baptisms. Everyone is invited to think about what God may be calling us to do as we live out our baptisms and practice our faith. Special recognition is given to those who were baptized during the previous year.

Earth Day ~ TBA (April 2018)

Nationally, this day broadens the base of support for environmental programs, rekindles public commitment and builds community activism around the world through a broad range of events and activities. All ages come together to help keep our local community clean.

Grandparents Day ~ April 2018

This is a day when students invite grandparents, great-grandparents or other significant adults that are a part of their lives to celebrate with them as they grow in their faith.

Milestone Ministry

Milestone Ministry is an intentional ministry that connects households to each other and to the congregation, as we recognize and learn about God’s presence throughout the different stages of a life. Each Milestone reflects our desire to fulfill the promises we, as a congregation and family, made to our children at their baptism:

To live with them among God’s faithful people, bring them to the word of God and the holy supper, teach them the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments, place in their hands the holy scriptures and nurture them in faith and prayer, so that your children may learn to trust God, proclaim Christ through word and deed, care for others and the world God made, and work for justice and peace.

Each Milestone includes one or two classes for the child to attend with one or two significant adults, such as a parent, grandparent, or godparent—a time to gather, share, and practice your faith. Classes are scheduled to take place on Wednesday evenings from 6:00—6:30 p.m. (during the Church School hour), unless otherwise listed.  Each Milestone includes a blessing and recognition.

All households are welcome to participate in Milestone Ministry, including friends and family who are not members at St. John. Check the church calendar for dates and times when each of these classes meet.

Any age ~ First Communion

If your child is asking about and wants to participate in this meal, they are likely ready! God says ALL are welcome at his table, and this definitely includes our children.

1 year olds ~ Baptismal Birthday

We begin our year celebrating the baptisms from the previous year with a baptismal birthday party! Come for cake, prayers, blessings, and fun!

2 year olds ~ Prayer: Talking to God

“Now I lay me down to sleep…” and “God is great, God is good….” are a few prayers which are introduced to children pretty early. It is important for them to know that God is with us always, and we can talk to Him ANYTIME, not just at mealtime and bedtime.

3 year olds ~ Entry into Church School

The first day of school is always a stressful day—and it can be the same at Church School. This orientation event helps children transition into Church School so they know what happens and where to go before that “big day” happens.

4 & 5 year olds ~ Welcome to Worship

The sanctuary is a big place for small children, and they often wonder about what they see around them. All children should feel welcome, and this class gives children the opportunity to explore the sanctuary and learn about how all God’s children are a vital and welcomed part of worship!

Kindergarten ~ Lord’s Prayer

Lord, teach us to pray… “Our Father in heaven…” Teaching young children the Lord’s Prayer and what it means is a great place to engage them into worship. Children feel more comfortable and welcome as they participate and hear familiar words during worship service.

1st & 2nd Grade ~ Kids and Money

Learning good money-handling habits is essential for all ages! How and why do we spend our money? How and why do we save it? How and why do we share it with others? What other ways can we learn to share?

3rd Grade ~ Bible Adventure

Participants are presented with a Study Bible. Learning about the Bible is truly an adventure! Students are encouraged to mark up their Study Bible and have family members note their favorite bible verses and write words of encouragement. Families discuss how to use their Bibles cross-generationally at home.

4th Grade ~ Apostles’ Creed

What do we believe? The Apostles’ Creed is one way, as Christians, to say what we believe. This class walks through the Apostles’ Creed, why we have it and what it means to us.

5th Grade ~ My Body, God’s Gift

Sexuality is God’s good gift to humankind. As children mature physically, this is a time to partner home and congregation to make sure the children we love have good information, clear and consistent values, and support to be moral.

6th Grade ~ Imago Dei – “Image of God”

Each of us is wonderfully made in God’s image. This class reminds us of our importance in the world and gives you tools to communicate as a family through the teen years.

9th Grade ~ Affirmation of Baptism

Confirmation students affirm their Baptism and are recognized at this service. Faith statements are read and the “laying of hands” by parents and mentors signify the support for continued growth of each student through their faith journey.

12 Grade ~ Senior Recognition & Dinner

Celebrating the graduation of the senior class! Students are recognized during worship with the Quilting group providing handmade quilts to “wrap our students in the love of St. John” as they venture into the next phase of their life. A special Senior Dinner also takes place for the student and their families.
