I'M GETTING MARRIED!

You’re probably thinking, “duh” because at this point, it’s the worst kept secret in Dickinson, but I figured I’d make it official by finally putting it in writing.

Last summer, on my birthday, I proposed to my longtime girlfriend, Becca Simonds.

For those of you who don’t know Becca, she is originally from Colorado, where much of her family lives. She moved to Dickinson two years ago and is finishing her second year teaching 4th grade at Prairie Rose Elementary School. Becca serves as a mentor in

St John’s confirmation program for a group of 8th grade girls and she also teaches dance at the Academy of Dance. Becca and I have had a lot of fun finding ways to connect with the community of Dickinson these last couple years.

I met Becca in 2011 while we were both working at Sky Ranch Lutheran Camp – way up high in the mountains of northern Colorado. Interestingly, Sky Ranch was neither of our top choices for summer employment that year. I had my heart set on Flathead Lutheran Bible Camp in Montana and Becca was pretty sure she was going to work at Rainbow Trail (the other Lutheran camp in Colorado). But during both of our interviews with the Associate Director, Andy Sprain, we both felt called to change course. We both felt that Sky Ranch was where God wanted us to be. Thanks be to God (and Andy!) for the strong sense of mission and community that pulled us both to Sky Ranch that summer!

Fast forward 7 years … Becca and I will be united in marriage on July 1st in Lyons, Colorado in the presence of our family and close friends. It will be a full-circle moment for us to come back to the Rocky Mountains to affirm our vows. Andy Sprain will be our preacher, and our friend from seminary, Pastor Lisa Janke, will preside over the ceremony. We couldn’t be more excited!

One year ago, I thought that an entire year until the wedding was way too long of a time to wait! Like with many things in my life, I was impatient. But the months have flown by and July 1st is fast approaching. Along the way we’ve had a lot of fun planning the details of our wedding day and making arrangements to honeymoon in Costa Rica.

Thank you for all the love and support you have shown to me and Becca over the last few years. As I have preached at many weddings in the course of my ministry, marriage is not something anyone does alone. Healthy marriages live in community. Thank you for being our community in Dickinson. We ask that you would pray for us, not just for things to go well on July 1st but also that our marriage would be healthy and strong for all the years of our lives. We look forward to celebrating with you when we return from Colorado and sharing our pictures and stories!
