Did you know God has two hands?
You’re probably thinking, “well yeah, I have two hands and I was created in God’s image!” But I’m not talking about those hands. I am talking about the hands God uses to do stuff in the world. God’s right and left ways (or strategies) of dealing with creation.
A right hand and a left hand – that’s how Martin Luther imagined God works in our world.
If you are reading this article, my guess is that you know all about God’s right hand. It’s with God’s right hand the church brings hope and peace to the world through Jesus. If you’ve ever been moved by a sermon, felt connected at the Communion table, or sensed a deeper faith in a Bible study, that was God’s right hand at work. God’s right hand is always forgiving and always loving us through the church.
But God is ambidextrous.
God’s left hand is just as busy as God’s right. Martin Luther understood that our Creator is also deeply involved in matters outside the church. That’s because God loves us and wants to provide for us. So, God is the one calling men and women into all sorts of vocations, like plumbing, teaching, or governing. (Isn’t it great that God calls educated people to fix the pipes that the government uses to send water to nourish your family?)
God’s left hand is a reminder that God cares about more than just your spiritual life. God cares about your physical and emotional needs today. And that means God is deeply involved in politics.
I know, I know! “Separation of church and state!”. But God loves us too much to leave politics and governing to our sinful selves. God wants good council members, justices, governors, and presidents who can help provide for our basic needs and who can curb the devastating effects of sin in the world. And God wants informed citizens who can vote with facts and a love for their neighbor. And whenever the leaders act in corrupt or unjust ways, God also works through protestors who demand justice and change.
Joe Natwick, Assoc. Pastor
God is at work in the church and the state. That’s really good news.
How different might Washington look if the people acted more like
God was working through them to bring hope and mercy to the world?
Rest assured; God will be at work on November 3rd through you. So, come to the polls with mercy, love, forgiveness, compassion, and hope. Come to the poll as a Christian in service to your neighbor.
But remember, God might not show up in the way you expect!
