Where There is Ice Cream, There is Something to Celebrate

While the summer was quiet at St. John, September was not!
Your community was bustling on many occasions, particularly on September 8th and 26th.

First, Rally Day happened! Like many recent gatherings at St. John, Rally Day had a reunion-feel.
I said many of the things you might say at a family reunion. “You’ve grown so tall!” “What grade are
you in now?” “It’s been too long.” “Go get some free ice cream!”

That last one might not be a reunion saying, but it sure was fun to say on Rally Day!
Thanks to your generosity, ice cream was added to the menu of hot dogs and hamburgers. And ice cream somehow made the sweet gift of gathering outside on the front lawn even sweeter. There is joy in seeing kids giggle with one another as they enjoy the simple miracle of ice cream.

ice cream kidsIt is the simpler moments that bring the most joy, isn’t it?
Gathering on a lawn. Hearing a familiar story from the Bible.
Singing a song with strangers.
Trying to keep up with a melting ice cream cone.

A few weeks later at Rocky Butte Park, there was a similarly festive feel on “God’s Work. Our Hands. Sunday”! The planning committee experimented with this day of service, keeping all of us in one place out in the
community. Service projects were completed at the park, where a free-will offering meal was grilled up by an
impressive team of two families. Dickinson’s Friendship Park was the recipient of so much of your generosity that day. And again, there was ice cream, with a $1 from every cone given to Friendship Park.

Where there is ice cream, there is a sweet sense of community.
This is what I noticed in September.

Although every one of us will not gather for a while, I do hope our community members who are being cautious and waiting to gather know how much each person matters to this community of faith. Church is not a “must be present to win” kind of gathering. It is a “you matter a whole lot no matter how you are gathering these days.”

Next year, I hope ice cream makes another appearance on Rally Day! It tends to go well with celebrations. As the church in the world, we do have much to celebrate, beginning with the love of Jesus Christ that is for all the world. May our community of faith share this good news in all that we do, in each of the ways we gather.
