 Passage: Isaiah 9:1-7
Advent Eve Today we bid farewell to the lengthy liturgical season of Pentecost. We made our way past the Day of Pentecost, weeks of Ordinary Time, Reformation and All Saints days. But that’s enough looking back. For most of us, it is easier to look back at what is known than it is to look forward into unknown. Even when the past is undesirable, we often choose to dwell there and not dream of the future. The liturgical name for today is a fine example. God’s people begged God for a king even though history had taught them human kings tended to disappoint. God’s people could not imagine a future that looked different from the past they had known. And so, God would take things slowly. The future would begin with a 9-month wait period. To everyone’s surprise, the king was born ordinary and impoverished. He ruled with love and not force, which was the future none of God’s people imagined. When his kingship ended with execution, what appeared to be failure won a future of eternal life for you and me. It goes to show that a future with God might not be so bad after all.

 Passage: 1 Kings 19:1-18
Today we recognize “All Saints Day” We speak of people who have been named and claimed by God in Holy Baptism as saints. In the assembly today we give thanks for all the saints “who from their labors rest,” who have fought the good fight, who have gained the crown. In the church, we often rely on images and symbols to say what words cannot. In the chancel area, there is a banner with photos and the names of St John members who have died in the past year. We will name each of these saints today during worship and will give you an opportunity to speak the names of others whose lives on earth have ended.

 Passage: John 8:31-36
We rejoice at this commitment to grow in faith, to live among God’s faithful people, to hear the word of God and share in the Lord’s supper, to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word & deed, to serve all people, following the example of Jesus, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth.

“For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by the law” (Rom. 3:28). Oh, how Lutherans love this verse. How we love to shout it from the rooftops, especially on Reformation Sunday! And yet, if we’re completely honest with ourselves, each one of us has our own “law” that we insist we or others must follow in order to prove ourselves righteous. The law that says if we really loved God and neighbor, we would lose twenty pounds, throw our preschooler the best birthday party anyone has ever seen, give more money to church, and never, ever forget to say grace before eating a meal. The law that says that if those people were really Christian they would never vote for candidate X, support policy Y, or engage in activity Z. How does the good news of Jesus’ death and resurrection destroy these laws and bring life and freedom to all?

Beckoning God, in the stillness of the night you called Samuel into your service. Call us into service with a voice we are able to hear, and give us hearts to come when we are called. Amen.
